WHERE'S VESPRINI?: VISA, THAT WON'T DO NICELY
Tuesday February 04, 2014
As we wave goodbye to The Admiral stuck home in Australia for another year I can’t help wonder why speedway poses such a threat to national security.
To miss one season is unfortunate to miss two is scandalous. Obviously rules need to be in place to stop us being swamped by foreign workers from outside the EU but quite what have the authorities got against speedway? Jason Doyle is probably the highest profile rider caught up in the latest fiasco which could leave him able to ride anywhere in Europe except the UK. Perhaps the Border Agency know something we don’t and as well as scoring hatfulls of points against us they think Doyley has been secretly planning to replace David Cameron at No 10! Personally I can’t see it as Andrew Mitchell had enough trouble getting his pushbike along Downing Street you’d surely have no chance with 500cc’s attached and no brakes.
With so much doubt over whats going on there was little choice but to leave Nelson watching from afar and bring in a replacement. Step forward Mathieu Trésarrieu to become the first Frenchman to sign for the Rockets. Back in his days at the Isle of Wight I always thought Mat could do a job in Hoddesdon and now we’ll get the chance to find out. Prone to the occasional wobble he’s good to watch and proved the match winner with paid 10 when he appeared for Ipswich against us in Hoddesdon in September 2012. Mat will be the token foreigner amongst our six Brits but I’m sure he won’t take long to get used to the lads and Team Manager John’s Essex accent. We’ll get our first look on Friday 14th March at Press and Prtactice Day, weather permitting as it might take Webby that long to dry things out.
Reaction to the team on the internet has been mixed some people have us in the top four others the bottom three, I’m staying silent on the subject. In about a month I’m sure I’ll get the annual e-mail from The Star asking me for my predictions for the season. Not to blow my own trumpet too much but I’ve had a pretty good record over the years but in 2005 and 2007 I knew I’d get a lot of stick for not showing more faith in our boys. The reason is simple, superstition dictates I’ll never predict the Rockets will win the league even if I believe it so don’t read too much into my 2014 picks! Finally I couldn’t sign off without some belated birthday greetings to Uncle Len who turned 82 recently. As my Dad used to say “ you can’t please all the people all the time†but I just hope I have half Len’s enthusiasm and drive when I’m his age. Only he will know the real secret but I have noticed he’s rather partial to curry sauce on his chips so maybe thats the answer to a long happy life!
Up The Rockets!
Pete
