WHERE'S VESPRINI?: THE RIGHT TROUSERS!
Monday March 31, 2014
Apart from a complete traffic nightmare trying desperately to get back from Cambridge to Hoddesdon by 7pm I don’t think I’ve had such a good time at a season opener in ages.
Watching Eddie, Steve and Luke turn back the clock ably supported by Mat and young Norman brought back memories of.......Ok I’m going to stop there for fear of putting the mockers on what could be a very memorable 2014. It took a bit of getting used to seeing the new bouncy castle up and doing its job, not that it got much of a testing thankfully. Our trusty track snapper Bushy or ‘pictures by’ as he’s known by me is a big fan though as he assures me it allows him to pick out the riders much better. Not sure about the sight lines from the bends though, there seemed to be a lot of people waving at us from the back straight. I know Uncle Len has plans to sort that out in the weeks to come. First though he needs to get rid of the cast on his injured arm, I’m sure I heard him telling someone he did it when he was testing out the air fence on press and practice day but I may have been mistaken!.
Must say I expected a little more from the Panthers as did John when I spoke to him afterwards. It had obviously been a busy evening for our Team Manager as he hadn’t had time to find his customary post match apple. Without the Fish and Ulrich Ostergaard Peterborough would have appeared a pretty tame bunch. Even little Lasse Bjerre only burst into action after the curse of the commentator struck the box with Ken calling him inconsistent. No sooner had the words hit the mic than he cut inside Steve for two of his four points, it was almost as if he had a set of speakers in his helmet!
It was good to see that Mat had overcome his press day problems with the third and fourth bend and young Norman show his true colours. Heat 7 was the highlight for many people as the 747 recorded his first victory at home since 16th June 2012 against Somerset ( Heat 3: Bowen, Perry, Wells, Doyle 58.2 for fellow anoraks!). After a career which had seen him become responsible for shares in British Steel rising thanks to his various pinned body parts who could begrudge the lad another triumphant return.
Off the track there was also a notable moment. The return of the Union Jack Trousers and a natty tie to match as our lovable Pit Marshall Webby turned on the style. Now it is rumoured that our friends at Lakeside have designs on the man and his trousers which will now be appearing on a Friday night at Purfleet. Hopefully the thrills (?) of the Elite League won’t turn our lads head and the right trousers will be in their rightful place at Rye for the rest of the season.
Up The Rockets!
